The Other 98% is affiliated with the Action Network, a progressive internet mobilization hub that has helped plan events including the March for Our Lives and the March Against Trump in Washington, D.C. January 20, 2018, was the date of the Women’s March. 

Background of The Other 98%

In response to the conservative Tea Party movement, liberal activists John Sellers and Andrew Boyd founded an organization in 2010 called The Other 98%. The organization, which was first formed under the moniker “The Other 95%,” existed for over a year before the left-leaning Occupy Wall Street movement and its slogan “We are the 99%.” 

A Facebook group called “The Other 98%” was created on April 3, 2010. Activist protests, many of which concentrated around “flash mobs” and musical performances, were initially organized through the Facebook page of the Other 98%. The page was originally used for this purpose. In response to the 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, the group planned a surprise concert at a Minnesota Target. The performance was funded by the progressive group MoveOn Civic Action.

After the Other 98% Facebook page became popular because of the memes it shared, the group decided to stop planning protests. The last known protest by the group took place on February 3, 2015, when members marched to the New York City offices of Citibank. 7 Since then, the Other 98% has moved its focus to online lobbying via social media, namely Facebook, where it uses memes to disseminate its far-left political worldview.

Present Time Activities

With approximately 6.7 million likes and 6.6 million followers as of May 2021, the Other 98% Facebook page is not only one of the most popular political pages on Facebook but also one of the most popular sites in general. 8 Faces of Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla), Jeff Bezos (CEO of Amazon), and Ivanka Trump (daughter of Donald Trump) are blurred out in a banner ad that reads “Tax the Rich.” 

The Other 98%’s website, which solicits feedback from site users and distributes articles written by group members, has been rather inactive as of late. The last thing it published was an ad for a politically left-leaning “dramatic comedy web series” on September 23, 2019. 

Financial markets

For 2019, the Other 98% reported $167,765 in revenue and $142,175 in expenses on their tax returns. The Other 98% reported $505,243 in income in 2016, which dropped to $337,478 in the subsequent three years. A review of the company’s financial documents reveals a downward trend in revenues beginning in 2016.

Management of Authority

The Other 98% has appointed John Sellers to the position of executive director. Former principal of the now-defunct left-of-center Agit-Pop Communications agency and current head of the far-left advocacy organization the Ruckus Society. 12 Sellers began his activist career with the Washington, DC office of the radical environmental organization Greenpeace, where he rose to the position of office leader. Sellers, in 1992, joined a Greenpeace rally at the top of the Willis Tower in Chicago (then known as the Sears Tower) to protest nuclear power.
