Files Over Miles: B2B File Sharing And Its Alternatives

Sending files (even enormous ones) from one web browser to another is now possible using a brand-new service.  The Files Over Miles service leverages Adobe’s P2P file transmission features introduced in Flash Player 10.  With this P2P functionality, the file can be sent straight from one web browser to another, bypassing the necessity for a middle-man server.

Some of Files Over Miles’s features are as follows:

Quickly and with the capacity to transfer huge files

Secure Coding (128-Bit AES)

Compatible with any version of Flash Player 10.

UDP Distance Limitations for Hole-Punching with Files:

Computer being used to transfer the file has 755 MB of RAM available, then it is the maximum size file that can be sent.

If the recipient’s machine has 512 megabytes of RAM and you want to send him a file, the file must be less than 255 megabytes in size. [Adobe Flash’s capacity is limited].

Either endpoint is behind a firewall that filters UDP packets, communication will be impossible.

While the recipient is downloading the file, the sender’s browser must remain open.

Where and How to Download Files Over Miles

Choose the file on your computer to upload, and an own URL will be created for it.

Send the link to the person you’d like to get the file from.

Once the sender initiates the download, the file is stored in their local memory (the sender’s browser must remain open until the transfer is complete).

It’s been sent over and now it’s being stored in the recipient’s RAM.

When the transfer is complete, the recipient can store the file locally.

Upon completion of the file transmission, you may dismiss both browser windows.

Changes in the Future

Currently There are future plans to improve Files Over Miles, so consider this a beta release.  In the next phase of development, we plan to implement a protocol similar to BitTorrent to speed up file sharing by dividing the upstream burden. A link on the page’s right side lets users provide feedback and propose additional additions to the service.
